Broadband Infrastructure Funding and the Digital Divide: Prioritizing People Over Miles
As government officials weigh how best to allocate $65B in resources under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, we recommend a “people over miles” approach. This will ensure more access to broadband at the speed necessary to learn, work, and access vital services.

Pride and Prejudice 2022
For Pride Month 2022, we updated our 2021 analysis on the share of workers expressing affiliation with LGBTQ+ on their resumes. In 2021, women in STEM were twice as likely to profess an affiliation with the LQBTQ+ community on their resumes. This gap narrowed in 2022 to 1.9 times as likely.

The Impact of Internet Access on Covid-19 Deaths in the US
The internet may have been even more important in the pandemic than initially understood. Holding everthing else equal, a 1% increase in broadband availability could lead to a 0.1% decline in Covid mortality. The impact was starkest in urban areas.

As societies reach a critical mass of users in the digital economy, the factors of production and value creation in the digital economy tend to gravitate towards creating and capturing value from the attendant network effects of existing, oft adept and affluent users. This leaves those at the socioeconomic margins further behind and exacerbates the gaps between the digitally affluent and the digitally deficient in a society in the absence of policy interventions channeling these inputs into inclusive innovation by design.
